A man with a history of mental illness who shot to death his mother has been convicted of second degree murder for the killing of the Santa Barbara County schoolteacher.
A San Luis Obispo County jury declined to find Christopher Shumney guilty of first degree murder, but convicted him of the lesser charge for the September, 2011 killing of Karen Shumney.
The woman had gone to visit her son at his San Luis Obispo apartment. The two argued, and she left for a few minutes to try to let him cool off. But, when the Vandenberg Middle School teacher returned, the now 36 year old man killed her.
He has a history of mental illness dating back more than a decade. The jury which convicted him will now have to decide whether he was sane at the time of the killing.
