“Fresh & Easy” Supermarket Chain Owner Rebuffs Shutdown, Sale Talk

Posted on Saturday, February 2, 2013 12:05am

A British supermarket company with 10 locations on the South Coast is now saying that it’s not going to sell its U.S. chain, or close stores.

Tesco last year said it was looking at options for the more than five year old Fresh & Easy chain, which features a mix of traditional supermarket foods, and prepackaged ready to cook items.

Industry experts say costs were higher than expected for the chain, and profits not as high as anticipated.

In an e-mail to customers, Fresh & Easy reaffirmed its commitment to the chain, and thanked them for their support.

Fresh & Easy has nearly 200 stores in California, Arizona, and Nevada, including stores locally in places like Simi Valley, Newbury Park, Oxnard, and Santa Barbara.
