Water District In Ventura County Opens Door To Purchase, Or Takeover Attempt Of Water Company

Posted on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 12:08am

A water district in Ventura County has taken a key step towards the potential purchase, or attempted takeover of a water company serving parts of the Ojai area.

The Casitas Municipal Water District last night reviewed a consultant’s report on what would be involved in trying to take over facilities owned by the Golden State Water Company. Customers upset with what they say are higher than justified prices asked the water district to look at the situation. Company officials say the charges are justified, and that it’s unfair to compare water rates with nearby government operated water systems which also are paid for with taxes.

More than 175 people were on hand for the community meeting at Nordoff High School. The water board agreed to take action to form a Community Services District, which would be the first step in the process. They set a March 13th date for a public hearing. If the water board decides to try to move forward after that, Golden State’s 2800 customers would be asked to go to the ballot box to approve bonds to pay for the takeover effort.

Golden State officials didn’t speak at last night’s meeting, but told KCLU News earlier this week they aren’t interested in selling the water system.
