The first reported flu related death of the year on the South Coast occurred in Santa Barbara County.
County Health officials say an 80 year old woman died as a result of contracting the flu.
The flu has reached epidemic proportions nationwide, and in California, state health officials say it’s spiked by about ten percent in the last week.
Officials say with less than half of the state’s population currently having flu shots, people should get the vaccine. The flu season historically peaks around the end of January, and early February.
