Two Ventura County Supervisors are calling on the entire board of supervisors to pass a resolution today calling for a federal ban on assault weapons, and high capacity ammunition magazines.
Supervisors Steve Bennett and Kathy Long are bringing the issue to the board, in the wake of last month’s mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Connecticut.
In a letter to the board, the two supervisors say there’s been an increase in the number of acts of violence using semi-automatic weapons. They also point out the weapons pose a big threat to law enforcement officers.
Bennett and Long say that the Newtown tragedy puts a new spotlight on the mental health system, and the need to improve it.
