Community Groups in Ventura County, San Joaquin Valley Sue EPA Over Pesticides

Posted on Friday, December 21, 2012 12:07pm

Some community groups in Ventura, and the Jan Joaquin Valleys have filed suit against the federal Environmental Protection Agency over air pollution related to pesticides.

Groups including the Wishtoyo Foundation, and Ventura Coastkeeper say they took the legal action today because of their concerns about the use of the agricultural fumigant methyl bromide.

The groups contend unhealthy amounts of the pesticide are being used, exposing Latino schoolchildren who often live in agricultural areas to the chemical.

They say it’s become a civil rights issue.

The suit wants the EPA to force the state enforce tougher standards. The state current has more stringent guidelines than the EPA requires.
