Five Arrested On Hate Crime Charges In Ventura County

Posted on Friday, December 14, 2012 12:42am

Ventura County Sheriff’s detectives say they’ve arrested five people they say were responsible for a pair of hate crime incidents at campgrounds, including one attack with baseball bats which left a victim with a broken arm.

Investigators say both incidents happened September 7th. The first attack was at the Middle Lions Campground, off of Highway 33 outside of Ojai. The group aimed racial slurs towards some campers, and then attacked them with baseball bats. One person suffered a broken arm, and the victims escaped more serious injuries by fleeing.

Detectives say later the same night, the same group of people attacked a group of hunters in the Rose Valley Campground area, again insulting them first, and then attacking them with baseball bats.

One of the suspected attackers, Ryan Vanausdell of Oak Park, was arrested in September. This week, investigators say they arrested the other four, and identifed them as Kirk Smets, Andrew Martin, Forrest Darrough, and Mya Braschler, all from Ventura.
