City Of Ventura Settles Civil Rights Lawsuit For $285,000

Posted on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 9:12am

The City of Ventura has settled a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by a man who says he was injured by police when they were searching for stolen electronics.

The city agreed to pay $285,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by Denny Fields.

On Christmas Day of last year, police say a GPS on a stolen I-pad device led them to the condominium of his girlfriend. Officers tried to question Fields, and when he tried to close the door on him, there was a scuffle.

He suffered minor injuries, as did two police officers. They didn’t find the I-pad, but arrested Fields for assault, and mayhem charges.

Citing insufficient evidence, the DA’s Office declined to prosecute the man. City officials say while the settlement was costly, it was much less than the attorney’s fees for what could be a long federal trial.
