Coast Guard Crew Member Killed While Trying To Intercept Suspected Drug Smugglers Off Ventura County Coastline

Posted on Monday, December 3, 2012 1:06am

Two men are in custody, following a collision between two boats off the Ventura County coastline which left a Coast Guard crewman dead.

The Coast Guard tried to intercept a suspected smuggling craft early yesterday morning, near Santa Cruz Island. The Coast Guard cutter Halibut deployed a small boat to investigate a panga boat. Officials say the panga boat headed towards the Coast Guard craft, hitting it, and throwing two crew members into the ocean.

Coast Guard crew member Terrell Horne III suffered fatal injuries. The 34 year old man was from Redondo Beach. The other crew member escaped with minor injuries.

Other Coast Guard teams caught the men in the panga, but it’s unclear yet what charges they may face.
