A school which was once a seminary in Santa Barbara has been designated by the city as a historic landmark.
The Santa Barbara City Council approved the city landmark designation for the Garden Street Academy, a private school on the 2300 block of Garden Street in Santa Barbara. The facility has gone through millions in renovations, but work was done to try to retain the historic character.
The complex was the site of the St. Anthony’s Seminary from 1899 to the late 1980′s, when it was sold by Franciscan Friars. The seminary has a cloud over part of its history, because a number of former seminary students claimed they were abused by Friars, and eventually reached a multi-million dollar settlement.
