Authorities say they’ve solved the mystery behind the theft of some rare relics from Ventura’s historic San Buenaventura Mission,
arresting a suspect, and recovering most of the stolen items.
Someone stole nine relics from the mission’s rarely used Baptism Room October 12. The theft wasn’t noticed until this past weekend.
Ventura Police reviewing security cameras say they discovered that a man already in custody for another burglary from the mission was responsible for the thefts.
Investigators say after questioning Edward Burgess, they were able to get enough evidence to recover eight of the nine artifacts. They’re still looking for the final one.
Detectives say Burgess is a vagrant, and drug addict who stole the items to try to pay for drugs. Police say he’s facing four charges from other incidents, as well as a commercial burglary charge for stealing the artifacts.
