A surfer was fatally injured in a shark attack off the Santa Barbara County coastline, in the same general area where another man was killed by a Great White Shark two years ago.
It happened at around 11 this morning, near Surf Beach, by Vandenberg Air Force Base. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department says a man was surfing with a friend when he was attacked. The friend witnessed the attack, and pulled his friend from the water. He started CPR on the victim, while another surfer called 911.
Vandenberg Air Force base paramedics arrived, and took over CPR efforts, but the 38 year old man was pronounced dead at the scene. He hasn’t been identified, but officials say he was a civilian, and not affiliated with the base.
The type of shark believed to be involved in the attack is still under investigation. The damaged surfboard was recovered, and had bite marks on it.
It’s the same area where a UCSB student died in a fatal shark attack almost two years to the day. It was October 22nd, 2010 when Lucas Ransom was fatally attacked by a Great White Shark while boogie boarding.
