New Institute On South Coast Seeks To Make Items Like Plastic Pipes, And Backpacks From Sustainable Materials

Posted on Monday, October 15, 2012 6:37pm

A new institute at a South Coast University is going to look at ways to create commonly used items like plastic pipes, and backpacks out of sustainable materials, rather than chemicals made from oil.

The Center for the Sustainable use Of Renewable Feedstocks will be based at UC Santa Barbara. CenSURF received $1.75 million dollars from the National Science Foundation for its first three years of operation.

The Center will work with collaborators from three other universities, and the chemical industry to try to see if things like plants, and wood be broken down into useful chemicals for consumer, and industrial goods.
