Santa Barbara County Supervisors Approve Construction Of $96 Million Dollar Jail Complex

Posted on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 3:45pm

Santa Barbara County Supervisors have approved construction of a $96 million dollar jail complex, which is intended to ease decades of jail overcrowding.

County Supervisors today accepted an $80 million dollar state grant which will fund most of the construction of a new jail in the Santa Maria area. The 376 bed facility is planned for 50 acres of land at Black Road, and Betteravia Road.

The county has been dealing with court orders, and grand jury reports for decades calling for steps to ease overcrowding. The county has said it didn’t have the money.

Even with the state funding most of the new jail project, the county will still have to figure out how to deal with operational costs, which have been estimated at $15-20 million dollars a year.
