A Ventura County based Seabee battalion created during World War Two was officially decommissioned yesterday.
Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40 was disbanded in a ceremony at Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme. The move came as a cost cutting action by the military.
The battalion was created in 1942, and then disbanded when the war ended in 1945. But then, it was commissioned again during the Vietnam War.
The 500 plus member unit had gradually dropped in size due to transfers, and retirements in the year since the decommissioning was announced.
The final members of what was the “Fighting 40”
will be transferred to other units.
