Man Fatally Wounded In Confrontation With Oxnard Police Identified

Posted on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 12:30pm

Authorities are now identifying a man who is dead following an armed confrontation with police in Oxnard.

Officers were called to the 300 block of South H Street just after 12:30 Tuesday afternoon, by reports of a holding a gun to his head.

When police arrived, the man ran into a home, and a shot was fired. Officers didn’t know if he shot himself, or someone in the house.

Police say the man then ran outside again, confronted the officers, asking them to shoot him as he pointed a gun at his head. They say he then pointed the gun at officers, who fired, hitting the man. He was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later. He’s being identified as 36 year old Michael Mahoney, of Oxnard.

As is standard practice in cases like this, both Oxnard Police, and the Ventura County District Attorney’s officer are conducting independent investigations into the shooting.
