Posted on Thursday, August 9, 2012 12:17am

Ventura County’s largest city has received a big grant to beef up its fire protection.

A federal grant is going to allow Oxnard to hire 12 more firefighters.

It will increase the number of Oxnard City firefighters from 84 to 96, boosting the daily staffing at the city’s fire stations from 28, to 32 firefighters.

The $2.9 million dollar federal grant comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program.

The Oxnard Fire Department has seven fire stations, and handled nearly 18,000 calls last year.
