Voluntary Recalls Continue For Problems Related To Onion Plant In Ventura County

Posted on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 12:45pm

Part of a Oxnard onion processing facility remains closed after the company issued voluntary recalls as the result of the discovery of possible bacterial contamination in some of its shipments.

Gill Onions first issued a recall in mid-July, and then expanded it because of concern over discovery of tiny amounts of the Listeria bacterium.

No illnesses have been reported. The company has hired outside experts to track down the source of the contamination.

The recalls affected some diced, slivered, and whole peeled onions sold by retailers, as well as some food items like salads, burritos, and soups where the Gill onions in question were used as ingredients. Gill’s main onion processing facility is unaffected by the problem, and remains open.
