Thousand Oaks City Council Set To Look At “Right To Vote” Initiative

Posted on Monday, July 9, 2012 10:27am

Should voters almost always have the right to fill an unexpected vacancy on a city council? That’s the question facing the Thousand Oaks City Council.

A proposed ballot measure which has enough verified signatures to go to the ballot is now before the council.

Tomorrow night, the council is expected to decide whether to put the issue on the ballot on November, or, it could outright adopt the proposal, negating the need for it to go before voters.

The issue has been a controversial one in the city, with the council twice in recent years opting to fill long term vacancies by appointment, rather than through special elections.

Under the plan, until the special election takes place, the council would still be able to make a short term appointment if it feels it’s needed.
