The Santa Barbara Zoo has an unusual new resident.
A tiny Island Fox, discovered abandoned on San Clemente Island, has been donated to the zoo.
The Navy, which controls the island, tried to reunite the pup with its parents, but after they failed to return, it was kept in captivity so it would survive.
The young fox, named Beauregard, is the Zoo’s second island fox, joining Lobo, an island fox from Santa Rosa Island.
The Island Fox is an endangered species. They are small animals, not much larger than a cat, and are only found in the Channel Islands, where they have developed into distinct subspecies.
