Burglary Suspect Shot To Death After Ramming Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Patrol Car

Posted on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 12:59am

A man who was a suspect in a Santa Barbara County home burglary was shot to death when he tried to flee, and then rammed his car into a County Sheriff’s Department patrol car.

It started just after 12:30 yesterday afternoon, when a woman reported someone had broken into her home on the 2900 block of Highway 154, in the Santa Ynez Valley.

As deputies approached the home, they saw a man leaving in a car. The driver refused to stop, and the car headed into Buellton on Highway 154, and then jumped on the southbound 101 for a short distance.

The car got off the freeway, and then got back on the freeway at Santa Rosa Road, going northbound through southbound traffic.

The driver then stopped at the freeway’s Santa Ynez River bridge. A County Sheriff’s deputy drove up to the scene, and the patrol car was rammed by the man. The deputy opened fire, killing the man.

His name hasn’t been released pending notification of relatives. Investigators are trying to unravel exactly what led to the series of events.
