Legislation Co-Authored By South Coast Congresswoman Seeks To Provide New Protection For Organic Food Status

Posted on Friday, June 22, 2012 12:42am

A South Coast congresswoman is co-authoring proposed legislation seeking to provide new insurance that food sold as organic meets that labelling.

Democratic Congresswoman Lois Capps of Santa Barbara, and Republican Congressman Richard Hanna of New York introduced the Organic Standards Protection Act.

Capps says if it becomes law, it would grant the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program legislative authority to more effectively protect the integrity of certified organic products.

The Central Coast is second in the state in organic produce sales.
