Santa Barbara City College To Start Charging For Currently Free Adult Education Classes

Posted on Thursday, June 21, 2012 10:42am

Santa Barbara City College is going to start charging for many of its currently free adult education classes.

The District Board of Trustees voted to start phasing in fees this fall, as part of its effort to stabilize its budget, which has been hit hard by state funding cuts.

There was debate over the timing of the addition of the fees, because officials say that some classes will probably end up being discontinued, because with fees they won’t get enough students to make them work financially.

Some wanted all of the fees phased in this fall, but the plan which was adopted on a close 4-3 vote calls for adding fees to 40% of the classes this fall, and another 20% in the winter.
