Voters To Decide Whether They Want Extra Protection For Agland In One Santa Barbara County Community

Posted on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 11:34am

Voters in one Santa Barbara County community will get the chance to decide whether they want to provide extra protection for agricultural land.

The Goleta City Council last night decided to put a measure on the ballot pushed by some community members which would require a public vote on proposals to rezone any parcels of agland which are ten acres or more.

The proposal would in effect change the city’s general plan, so the decisions in these specific instances regarding agland would be shift from the city’s Planning Commission, and City Council to the voters.

There are some exemptions, including land which is needed to meet state mandated housing requires, landed for new schools, and agland which would be used for new parks.

There are about a half dozen parcels of land in the city which would be impacted by the proposal should it pass in November.
