Santa Barbara County Grand Jury Report Calls For Public Access To Audio/Video Recordings In Law Enforcement Vehicles

Posted on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 12:41pm

A new Santa Barbara County Grand Jury report is calling on law enforcement agencies in the county to have officers inform people they stop that their patrol vehicles are equipped with audio, and video recording devices, and that if people are considering filing a complaint, they have access to the recordings.

The report says access would reduce the number of costly citizen complaints, and lawsuits filed against law enforcement agencies. It suggests having open access to tapes would add a layer of transparency to law enforcement agencies. And, the report calls on agencies to inform the parents of under age children of the recordings, noting that the minors might not volunteer the information themselves.

Currently, all of the agencies in the county have recording devices in their vehicle except for Guadalupe, and Santa Barbara Police, and the Santa Barbara department is in the process of obtaining the devices.
