Chino Man Arrested After Investigators Say He Bought Multiple New Vehicles On South Coast With Bad Checks

Posted on Monday, June 11, 2012 12:34am

Authorities say he claimed to be a multi-millionaire dying of cancer, but that he was really a con artist who bought two new vehicles in Ventura, and Santa Barbara with bad checks, and was in the process of trying to buy more.

The Ventura County Auto Theft Task Force arrested Ryan Anthony Barba of Chino as he showed up to buy another vehicle from a Ventura dealership.

Investigators say Barba had recently married, leading his new family to believe he was rich, and also seriously ill. They say he wrote some bad checks to his new relatives, ranging from $5,000 to a million dollars, and that he was also in escrow to buy two homes in the Santa Barbara area.

While being questioned, detectives say the 31 year old man admitted many of the crimes, like writing bad checks. He was arrested on multiple charges, and because he was already on parole, is being held without the possibility of bail.
