California voters overwhelming approved new term limits for state legislators, okaying Proposition 28 by a 61% to 39% margin.
It cuts the maximum time someone can serve in the State legislature from 14, to 12 years, but also removes limits on the amount of time someone can serve in either chamber of the house.
Meanwhile, Proposition 29, the controversial plan to add a dollar a pack tax to cigarettes to fund cancer research, was narrowly defeated.
It fell by less than two percentage points, 50.8% no, to 49.2% yes. The tobacco industry dumped tens of millions into the campaign against the proposal.
