The Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees held a special, closed door meeting this afternoon to interview its short list of candidates for District Chancellor.
35 people applied for the job, and district officials say the list was narrowed to five. The trustees are looking for a successor to James Meznek, who is retiring at the end of June, after eight years heading the district.
Whoever takes over the post will face major challenges. The district has been hit hard by state funding reductions, which have led to program cuts, and layoffs at its three campuses. The district is also trying to correct problems with the way trustees have been managing the district, issues which ended up with the campuses being put on probation by the community college accreditation organization.
