EPA Official Gets Close-Up Look At Major Toxic Waste Site In Ventura County

Posted on Thursday, May 10, 2012 12:33am

A top EPA official got a close-up look at one of the region’s biggest toxic waste sites.

James Woolford toured the former Halaco metal recycling facility in Oxnard yesterday. Woolford is Director of the EPA’s Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation. He toured the facility with some top Oxnard officials.

The site has been designated as an EPA “Superfund” site, which means it’s on a list of the worst toxic waste sites in the nation.

A number of toxic metals, and even some mildly radioactive waste has been found in the mountains of metal tailings on the site. The EPA has taken emergency steps to try to prevent rainwater from spreading contamination offsite, especially to nearby wetlands.

The agency has been conducting extensive soil, and water testing to try to determine the extent of contamination, and to develop a cleanup plan.
