Two Hazardous Materials Spills Reported Outside Of Santa Paula

Posted on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 3:15pm

Hazardous material teams are dealing with a pair of spills which randomly occurred off the same road in Ventura County today, outside of Santa Paula.

The first accident happened just before 8 this morning, on South Mountain Road near Willard Canyon. Ventura County Fire officials say the driver of a tanker truck apparently lost control of the vehicle, and it overturned, spilling hundreds of gallons of crude oil. The driver was unhurt. The spill was quickly contained, but it could take until around sunset to pump the remaining oil out of the wreckage.

Then, just after 2 p.m., liquid fertilizer being pumped from a tanker to a truck at a South Mountain Road ranch spilled, with about 300 gallons of the substance ending up on the ground.

The City of Ventura sent a hazmat crew to assist the county with that ongoing cleanup effort.
