Two men are in jail following a crime spree on Santa Barbara’s Eastside, which included a carjacking, shots being fired, and the stabbing of one of the suspects.
It started just before 11 last night, at the intersection of Punta Gorda, and Canada Streets. Police responding to a call of a traffic accident found an overturned SUV, but no one at the scene. Minutes later, a woman called to report that her SUV had been taken in a carjacking, and it turned out to be the one in the accident.
An hour later, police were called to the 100 block of East Mason Street by reports of shots being fired, and another traffic accident. They arrested Ernest Gil Lopez as he tried to flee the scene. Another man who tried to flee, Augustine Cruz, was found in a nearby creek bed, and after he refused to surrender, was arrested with the help of a K-9. They say Cruz had suffered a minor stab wound in a gang fight which occurred prior to the officer’s arrival on the scene.
Detectives say the two are known gang members, and are being held for resisting arrest while being investigated for the carjacking.
