Meetings Taking Place On South Coast This Week To Detail Proposal For 101 Freeway Expansion

Posted on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 7:02am

A public forum is set to take place tonight on the proposed environmental impact report for the planned addition of carpool lanes to an 11 mile stretch of the 101 Freeway, in Santa Barbara County.

Hundreds of people were on hand last night for a similar meeting in Montecito.

One of the main concerns expressed by residents at that meeting was about the impacts of noise during construction, and then after the new carpool lanes are in daily use. Caltrans officials say among the mitigation steps proposed are some sound walls, and the use of a type of freeway surfacing which will reduce noise.

However, because of costs, more than a third of the sound walls originally proposed for the project have been dropped. The lanes would extend from the Carpinteria, to the Santa Barbara area, and would be for carpools, and buses during peak hours, and open to all traffic during off peak hours.

Tonight’s meeting on the plan is from 5 to 8:30 p.m., at Carpinteria High School.
