Efforts To Protect Vice President During Visit To Santa Barbara Nabs Vandals

Posted on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 9:17am

A Santa Barbara Police officer watching a freeway overpass during the Vice President’s visit to Santa Barbara last week had some unexpected dividends, when he spotted a team of vandals in action.

On Thursday might, the officer had the job of guarding the Juniper Street Footbridge, which crosses the 101 Freeway in Santa Barbara, to insure that no one would pose a threat to the Vice President as his motorcade passed by.

The officer smelled paint, noticed some flashlights nearby, and realized a team of vandals was trying to tag a wall next to the railroad tracks running parallel to the freeway.

He called for backup. Six juveniles at the scene started running in different directions, but were caught by officers. The 15 to 17 year old teens are facing various charges ranging from probation violation, to vandalism.
