City Of Santa Barbara Continues Talks With Caltrans Over Proposed Local Takeover Of State Highway

Posted on Friday, April 20, 2012 10:35am

It’s a nearly five mile long state highway which runs through a South Coast city, but who should manage it has been a longtime issue.

Tomorrow night, the Santa Barbara City Council will look at the latest developments in efforts to have the city take over control of State Route 255, which runs from the intersection of Castillo, and Montecito Streets, west to its intersection with the 101 Freeway.

For years, many residents, and some officials have argued that it makes more sense for it to be a local road, under city control, so it can be managed in a way that’s more compatible with the neighborhoods it passes through.

Caltrans has agreed, but in the past, the city and the state agency were unable to agree on how much the state would contribute for Santa Barbara to take over responsibility for it.

The city, and state have been negotiating to try to reach a deal. Tomorrow night at 6, City engineers will update the City Council, and the community on the progress of the talks.
