Man Killed, Infant Seriously Injured When Amtrak Train Hits Car In Santa Barbara County

Posted on Thursday, April 19, 2012 7:16am

One man was killed, and an infant seriously injured after the car they were in was hit by an Amtrak passenger train in Santa Barbara County.

It happened just after 4 p.m. yesterday, on a dirt road just off of Highway 1, near the Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo County line outside of Guadalupe.

The CHP says the car had stopped in the area to pick up a farmworker, and was possibly backing across the tracks when it was hit. Both the man who died, and the seriously injured infant were thrown from the car, which was tossed more than 50 feet by the impact of the train. The names of the victims haven’t been released yet.

None of the more than 130 passengers on board the southbound train were hurt.
