Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Continues To Wrangle With Costs, Problems Related To Mental Health Issues With Jail Inmates

Santa Barbara County’s jail system has by default become one of the largest mental health service providers in the region.

It’s put a huge financial strain on the jail system, adding millions of dollars in costs for everything from medication, to treatment.

County Supervisors received a pair of reports yesterday, showing that there is some progress in efforts to improve services, and control costs. But, KCLU’s Lance Orozco reports officials admit they have a long way to go to cope with an issue involving thousands of inmates a year.
