A high school teacher in Ventura County got a huge surprise this morning,
when she found out she was being honored with a $10,000 award for science teaching excellence.

Newbury Park High School teacher Deborah Dogancay received the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence during a surprise presentation at the school this morning.

Amgen officials say they selected the teacher for her unique, hands on efforts to make science accessible, and interesting for students. It’s one of nine awards which were made internationally to science teachers.

Half of the award goes to Dogancay, while the other half goes to Newbury Park High School for its science programs.
