A trip by a Santa Barbara County couple to Palm Springs for a World War II veterans reunion ended in tragedy.
Robert and Lorraine Mathiasen of Goleta were visiting the desert last weekend for a reunion of the 100th Bomb Group. Friday night, the couple was crossing Palm Canyon Drive when they were hit by a car.
The 87-year-old man died about two hours after the accident. His wife was critically injured.
Mathiasen was a gunner in a B-17 bomber during World War II, flying some 30 missions.
While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, Palm Springs Police say it doesn’t appear drugs, or alcohol were factors.
