A former Lieutenant Governor, and State Senator from Santa Barbara County officially announced his intention to run for a new congressional seat in Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties.
Republican Abel Maldonado will take on Democratic Congresswoman Lois Capps of Santa Barbara for the 24th District seat.
His political career started as a Santa Maria City Councilman, and mayor.
Maldonado then served two terms as a state assemblyman, and then became a State Senator.
In 2010, then governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed him to fill the vacancy for Lieutenant Governor, but later than year, when he ran for a ful turn, he was defeated by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Maldonado will also face off against fellow Republican Chris Mitchum, who’s running as a Tea Party candidate.
The new 24th Congressional District includes all of Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties.
Maldonado announced his intention to run last year, but made its official today.
