A new report is recommending that the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, and County Fire Department merge their air operations.
The Sheriff’s Department has four helicopters, and an airplane, while the Fire Department has two helicopters.
A County Board of Supervisors subcommittee reviewed the air operations, and concluded merging the now separate agencies would save more than a quarter of a million dollars annually from the current arrangement, plus would enhance the overall ability to respond to major emergencies.
County supervisors are set to discuss the issue at today’s board meeting in Santa Barbara.
Ventura County currently has a combined air operations department, with the Fire Department contracting with the Sheriff’s Department.
