Ventura College Community College District Continues To Weigh Program, Class Cuts

Posted on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 9:34am

The Ventura County Community College District’s Board of Trustees is set to review proposed cuts to a number of programs when it meets tonight.

The District is trying to cope with a potential six million dollar budget shortfall, which could end up being millions more if a proposed tax hike by the governor fails to pass.

Among the roughly two dozen proposed program cuts are video and TV production classes at Oxnard College, architecture classes at Ventura College, and computer science classes at Moorpark College.

Some agricultural, arts, and journalism classes are also on the chopping block.College officials say they tried to target classes with low enrollment, or ones which were offered at other campuses in the district.

Some of the proposed cuts have left students upset, saying there are limited or no alternative classes left in their fields of interest, or that going to other campuses would create hardships.
