There is a correction to an update you may have heard 1/6 on KCLU about a Santa Barbara doctor, and his stepson on drug charges.
In the update, we said that the doctor, Julio Gabriel Diaz of Goleta, worked at the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinic on Milpas Street in Santa Barbara. That is incorrect. He actually worked at a clinic a few blocks away, identified by authorities as the Family Medical Clinic.
Here is the original story about the arrest:
A Santa Barbara doctor has been arrested on federal drug trafficking charges, after federal prosecutors say he was improperly writing prescriptions for dangerous drugs which led to at least one death.
Julio Gabriel Diaz was arrested at his Goleta home yesterday by DEA investigators, and Santa Barbara police.
Federal prosecutors say the 63 year old doctor improperly wrote prescriptions for patients for painkillers like OxyContin, and Vicodin.
Cottage Hospital staff members wrote a number of formal complaints to the Medical Board of California, and one claimed Diaz was nicknamed “The Candy Man” because he was a go-to man to get drugs.
The allegations include claims by two female Cottage patients they received drugs from Diaz in exchange for sexual favors.
He’s set to appear in federal court in Orange County this afternoon for arraignment.
