Simi Valley Decides To Withdraw From Ventura County Library System

Posted on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 3:32pm

The City of Simi Valley is the latest city in Ventura County to decide to withdraw from the county’s library system.

The Simi Valley City Council decided to take the action last night, despite opposition from a number of residents concerned about how the move might affect the quality of services.

Simi Valley, like other communities has been concerned about what it’s getting for the amount of property tax revenue it contributes to the system.

The issue took on an extra urgency because a new state law taking effect January 1st will make it more difficult for jurisdictions to withdraw from county library systems, and hire private contractors.

The action preserves different options for the city.

It could still negotiate a new contract with the county, it could try to run library services itself, or it could follow the path of Camarillo, and hire a private contractor.  The City of Ventura also looked at the same question recently, and decided to stay with the county system.
