Fire Causes Scare, Prompts Evacuations In Montecito

Posted on Thursday, December 1, 2011 11:47am

A small trailer fire caused a big scare in Santa Barbara County, because it happened in an area hit by a disasterous brush fire in 2008.

A 20 foot long travel trailer was discovered to be on fire just before 11 last night (11/30), on the 300 block of East Mountain Drive.

Because of concern that the fire might spread to nearby brush, Westmont College inititated an on campus evacuation, sending everyone to their gym.  It was the same facility used as an evacuation site during the November, 2008 Tea Fire, which destroyed more than 200 homes, as well as some facilities at Westmont College.

However, Montecito firefighters were able to knock down the blaze in about ten minutes.  The fire department didn’t order any evacuations, but the college had acted on its own as a precaution.

The cause of the trailer fire is under investigation.
