Amgen Cycling Tour To Bypass Ventura, Santa Barbara Counties in 2012

Posted on Thursday, November 3, 2011 12:02pm

America’s largest professional bicycling event will bypass Ventura, and Santa Barbara Counties when it takes place in 2012.

The Amgen Tour Of California has announced its 13 host cities for the May, 2012 event, and they don’t include any stops, or legs through our region.  Last year, the tour did individual time trials in the Santa Ynez Valley.  Those will take place in Bakersfield next year.  And, for the last two years, the tour ended in the Conejo Valley.  In 2012, the tour will wrap up in downtown Los Angeles, at the LA Live complex, which is owned by race owner AEG.

Tour officials say they try to modify the race each year, so it presents new, and different challenges.  More than 100 communities submitted applications to host race events.  Past organizers of the Conejo Valley leg of the event had announced earlier this year that they would not seek to have the race to return in 2012, and wanted to take a year off because of all the work involved in raising money, and gathering volunteers to be a host community.
