Ventura County To Expand Use Of Electronic Monitoring For Convicts Released Into The Community

Posted on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 9:45am

Ventura County will use electronic monitoring devices to help it deal with the influx of convicts it will be responsible for in connection with a new state law.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean received approval from County Supervisors this week to expand the program from the handful now in use, to perhaps more than 100.

The state has turned over responsibility to counties for a number of non-violent, low risk offenders as part of its efforts to ease California prison overcrowding.

However, Ventura County’s jail system is also overcrowded, so the sheriff is looking at alternatives like electronic monitoring of non-violent offenders, like white collar criminals.
