Suspect Arrested In 27 Year Old Santa Barbara Murder

Posted on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 11:00am

Santa Barbara Police say that some 27 years after a man was stabbed to death, the man believed to be responsible for the killing is finally behind bars.

In May of 1984, Antonio Pineda and Miguel Godoy Morales were involved in a barroom brawl.  A short time later, Pineda was stabbed to death on the 500 block of Olive Street.  Detectives say that Godoy fled to Mexico to avoid arrest, and prosecution.

In 2004, Santa Barbara Police investigators working with state, and federal law enforcement officials filed paperwork to give Mexican police the authority to arrest Godoy.  A Mexican judge issued an arrest warrant, but Godoy had disappeared.

Then, on October 12th of this year, Baja California law enforcement officers conducting surveillance near Godoy’s last known home in Tijuana spotted him working on a vehicle.  He was arrested without incident, and was flown to Mexico City for detention, and is now awaiting trial.
