A Ventura County community is again going to look at the controversy over whether the legal status of workers employed by city contractors should be verified.
The City of Simi Valley is the only city in the Ventura County-Santa Barbara region requiring contractor to use the E-verify system.
It’s a free process which allows employers to tell if their workers are American citizens, or people with papers to legally work in the U.S.
Use of E-Verify has been a hot issue among employers, civil rights groups, and labor organizations, with issues being raised about its accuracy, and propriety.
The issue is coming up again because of new legislation signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown, which will invalidate local ordinances requiring the use of E-Verify.
The Simi Valley City Council is scheduled to talk about the issue tonight (10/25), with the council considering whether it wants to keep the requirement in place until it’s banned to do so by the state on January 1st.
