Santa Barbara Congresswoman Proposes Teaching All Schoolchildren CPR

Posted on Friday, October 21, 2011 4:22pm

A South Coast congresswoman introduced legislation to provide funding to help teach all schoolchildren in the country CPR, as well as how to operate defibrillators.

Democratic Congresswoman Lois Capps of Santa Barbara authored what’s called the “Teaching Children To Save Lives Act”.

Capps says cardiac arrest kills 300,000 people annually, but that many could be saved if someone who knows basic resuscitation techniques steps up to help.

The legislation would authorize the U.S. Department of Education to award to local agencies, or schools to provide the training.  The money could also be used for training supplies, and defibrillators.
