Poll: Support Solid For Prop. 13

Posted on Friday, September 23, 2011 10:02am

A new poll shows Californians still strongly support the landmark—and controversial–property tax measure, Proposition 13.

It was more than thirty years ago that voters approved Prop. 13, the measure which reduced local property taxes and limited the amount they could be increased annually. The Field Poll says 63-percent of voters say if it were on the ballot again today, they’d back it. That’s similar to the support it had in the 1978 election. Voters don’t like proposals to change the measure– 50-percent oppose the idea of taxing business and commercial property owners at a higher rate than residential owners.

Californians would also reject any changes to Prop 13’s two-thirds legislative vote requirement to increase taxes. The Field Poll was conducted early this month of more than one-thousand voters.
